Free Downloads and New Music From Warp Records

Massive UK-based electronic and indie music label Warp Records is hooking everybody up with free tunes today.

Affiliated online music retailer Bleep partnered up with the Barcelona music festival Sonar to launch a series of free MP3 downloads, which feature fellow UK-based artists that will be playing the music festival and their exclusive tunes. Among the list is Hudson Mohawke, Broadcast, The Blessings, Roska, and Fuck Buttons, the latter two of which are available now, here. Also premiering today is a new track from IDM pioneers Autechre’s forthcoming ten-song release, Move of Ten. Stream the song “y7” over here.

On a related note, keyCMND favorite Flying Lotus also hooked the world up with an unreleased piece of music, called “Heave (n),” which is only available to hear streaming in that player up top.

Stream the New Ratatat Album Now

Those two NY dudes with the guitars and the drum-machines and the overflowing sample bank, Ratatat has a brand-new album coming out soon. It’s the duo’s fourth album, so they felt calling it LP4 was good enough.

Not too long ago, Evan Mast and Mike Stroud hooked the world up with the record’s first single, “Party With Children,” and now we’ve all got a chance to stream the as-yet-unreleased new album in its entirety. Head over here to listen to LP4, thanks to NPR, and you can pre-order your copy before its released June 8 via XL Recordings, here.

New Music From Toro Y Moi, Menomena, and Shlohmo

Today has been a particularly busy day for premieres. Throughout many of the internet’s various music outlets, relatively disparate artists Toro Y Moi, Menomena, and Shlohmo have unleashed never before heard songs on the unsuspecting masses. We couldn’t pick which was our favorite of the bunch, so we opted to share three of the tracks with you in one post.

Toro Y Moi’s new single “Leave Everywhere,” Menomena’s “FIVE LITTLE ROOMS” from the band’s forthcoming new LP, Mines, and Shlohmo’s cut from the upcoming Camping EP “Birthday Beat” are all included for you as stream, download, and other digital what-not, below.

Listen: Extra Life - “Head Shrinker (Tyondai Braxton Remix)”

It’s been quite a while since we’ve heard anything from Battles frontman and future-classicalist Tyondai Braxton, so despite us not having much background on the Brooklyn band Extra Life, we went ahead and posted this remix of the outfit’s track “Head Shrinker” anyway.

Braxton’s treatment of “Head Shrinker” is far more on the experimental, noisy side of his music rather than the orchestral endeavors he followed on last year’s Central Market, but somehow melody still finds its way into the mix. Truthfully, we’re not sure what exactly this version has to do with the original song, but we’ll take it in lieu of that new Battles album we remain waiting patiently for.

Listen: Grovesnor - “Taxi From the Airport (Radio Edit)”

One would imagine that despite the hectic schedule UK geek-pop outfit Hot Chip keeps its members like to keep busy in other ways. One man pulls a double shift with LCD Soundsystem, the bespectacled lead singer has his own solo project, and it looks like the drummer for the quintet does just the same. As Grovesnor, Rob Smoughton writes smooth ’80s-influenced pop songs that wouldn’t be the least bit out of place on soundtracks for Beverly Hills Cop or Miami Vice.

“Taxi From the Airport” is a driving number about a jet setting player trying to track a certain special someone after arriving in town. The song is a bit heavy on the kitsch and referential sonics (Hall & Oates’ guitar is laid on just as thick as Giorgio Moroder’s synths and drum machine), but still, “Taxi” has a soul of its own, and should make for a nice addition to Grovesnor’s debut album on Lore Recordings, Soft Return.

Listen: Guilty Simpson - “Cali Hills”

It takes about 45 seconds of Detroit MC Guilty Simpson delivering his dedication to producers J. Dilla and House Shoes over Madlib’s super-compressed beat before “Cali Hills” really gets to the point. Simpson’s guttural deadpan tells the story of his beat-junkie peers moving out to LA from their hometown, as he stayed behind to figure out his own rap game—trying to maintain his connections with those close friends the whole time. It’s a bit of a divergence from the drug rap featured on Simpson’s debut full-length, Ode to the Ghetto, but is nonetheless a heartfelt change to be heard on his forthcoming Madlib-produced second album, OJ Simpson, released May 18 via Stones Throw Records.

A Lull - “Weapons For War” b/w “Spread It All Around”self-released (2010)
Genre: IndieRating: B
The beginning of “Weapons For War,” the a-side single from shape-shifting indie outfit A Lull, is an introduction rife with textured atmosphere, pattering drum sounds, and a single percussive voice from lead singer Nigel Dennis. It’s a comfortable beginning, but it doesn’t last long. Before a whole minute is up, booming drum kits, high-pitched flutes, and swirling electronics are thrown into the mix, and that’s before the song really kicks off. The whole introduction lasts nearly half of the song’s length, but never overstays its welcome. Midway through “Weapons For War” it becomes even more apparent that A Lull is a band chock full of ideas, but fear it will never have enough time to share them all.
“Spread It All Around” is a far more immediate number—overtaking the listener with syncopated rhythms and vocal harmonies in a matter of seconds. The flurry of rim-shots and effects-laden voices soon give way to a piano-driven chorus that offers a welcome reprieve from the cacophony of the track’s opening. Both songs on the single last exactly four minutes and 20 seconds, but the wealth of movements and sonic experiments within each piece add to their inborn speed. Each track demands repeated listens due to the large amount of material to be heard, but within those layers lie A Lull’s charm. The band’s songs are like a classic film: you need to experience it over and over in order to catch every detail crafted therein.

Listen: HEALTH - “In Heat (Javelin Remix)” / Javelin - “Oh! Centra”

There are a ton of great albums about to be dropped upon our unprepared ears late this spring/early this summer, but few are as exciting as the feel good vibes to be heard from Brooklyn’s Javelin. Like a revamped version of The Avalanches on a bucket of anti-depressants or Girl Talk if Greg Gillis was into obscure tapes instead of Top 40 radio, Javelin make party jams for the lighthearted dancefloor obsessive.

Javelin’s remix of “In Heat,” from Get Color by LA’s HEALTH, is hardly any different from the approach the duo takes on its original tracks. Elements of the original song are juxtaposed with found sounds that came from God knows where; it all coalesces into something far more fitting Javelin’s repertoire than that of the noise-rock outfit. While we’re at it, check out “Oh! Centra,” a stand-out jam from Javelin’s forthcoming full-length, No Más, also below.

Listen: Pantha du Prince - “Stick to My Side (Four Tet Remix)”

This is more or less the musical equivalent of, say, the three hottest girls (or guys, depending) from LOST playing Seven Minutes in Heaven in front of you. Three of this year’s most interesting and talked about electronic musicians, Pantha du Prince, Panda Bear, and Four Tet, are brought together for this track: Four Tet’s remix of Pantha’s collaboration with Panda Bear, the Black Noise stand-out “Stick to My Side.”

The whole thing starts of mostly sounding like a straight Four Tet jam, but the accompanying parties’ influences soon shine through. Hendrik Weber’s trademark percussion elements slowly rise to the surface, as does Noah Lennox’s reverb-laden voice, and really get the jam cooking. Kieran Hebden’s version follows a great music video for the original track, and is sure to remain a necessary addition to the “Stick to My Side” single, digitally released tomorrow via Rough Trade Records.

Minus the Bear Reveals New Album, Free Download

Complicated-indie enthusiasts, rejoice! The patron saints of angular, melodic pop, Minus the Bear, are merely months away from releasing their follow up to Planet of Ice, a forthcoming full-length entitled Omni. The record is out May 4 on Dangerbird Records, and comes almost three years after Minus the Bear’s last studio album.

To get us all stoked and sweaty-palmed for the occasion, the Seattle quintet has built a weird little game in Omni’s website, and made the record’s first single, “My Time,” available for free download. A quick listen to the song reveals Minus the Bear’s lingering interests in electronics and synth work meshing ideally with the intricate guitars and vocals many have come to love. Download “My Time” here, and check out the album artwork below.

Little Dragon to Tour Stateside

There’s always been something a little special about the electronic pop crafted by the four Swedes in Little Dragon. Maybe it’s the way they mix the kind of enigmatic atmospheres reminiscent of The Knife and TV on the Radio with Tom Tom Club-esque dance jams, or maybe it’s the reservedly soulful nature of singer Yukimi Nagano’s feathery voice. Regardless, the songs on their latest album, ‘09’s Machine Dreams, warrant today’s ever-escalating ticket prices, and now Little Dragon is giving you the chance to prove your love.

Following the recent studio time spent writing two tracks for the forthcoming new Gorillaz album, Little Dragon are coming to North America for a full spring tour. We’ve posted those dates below, along with a taste from their last album to remind you of exactly what kind of sounds you’ll be hearing at these shows. Enjoy!

Mux MoolViking Funeral EPGhostly International (2010)
Genre: ElectronicRating: B
Mux Mool’s Viking Funeral EP, an offering of free music leading up to the release of producer Brian Lindgren’s debut album, Skulltaste, is five tracks of electronic hip-hop each cut from a different cloth. “Teal Trim” opens the set with an ethereal cue of nosie and melody set to a solid beat that buzzes with each hit. It’s a great lead-in that comfortably sets the tone for what comes next: “Ladies Know.” The track is a honest-to-goodness jam that retains the wispy aspects of “Teal Trim” while raising the stakes with grooving vocal samples, a stable of weird effects, and a live drum kit that’ll move you no matter your body’s current position. The song is followed by pulsating intonations which ooze from every pore of “Drum Babylon”; a serious and cool track the shuffles down a darkened street as a thick cloud of smoke rises from it’s mellowed vibe. The playful and sort of hilarious “Goblin Town,” which plucks audio directly from the animated movie of The Hobbit, might produce the most smiles of Viking Funeral’s five songs, but it’s not much for more than a novelty. Mux Mool’s EP ends with a lot of big sound pushing out from behind the boisterous lyrics on the collaborative track of “Death 9000”. MC’s Prof and P.O.S. throw lines back and forth amongst each other amongst the instrumental lifted off Skulltaste, and it rocks like a NES theme strungout on cheap speed. It could be the paramount track from Viking Funeral, if not just for sheer ability alone, but, truthfully, it’s just another reason to get excited for Mux Mool’s forthcoming full-length.

Download: Dâm-Funk - “Passion”

If you couldn’t tell from the epic scope of Dâm-Funk’s debut album, the double-disc Toeachizown, the boogie-obsessed producer spends just about every waking moment searching for funk’s future. Suffice it to say, producer Damon Riddick has a driving force inside of him; an unquenchable thirst to make music at all times. The fact is evidenced in part by this impromptu acoustic performance of “I Wanna Thank U (4 Steppin’ Into My Life),” and, additionally, by his series of previously unreleased and unmastered MP3s given away on the Stones Throw website.

“Passion” is the second track in this series (the first being “Speak the Truth”), and comes straight from Dâm’s studio to your iTunes with nary a change made. The song sounds fit for Toeachizown, but with a vocal chant unfamiliar to his catalog. You can download Dâm-Funk’s latest epic here.
